Used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tragedy struck some communities in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kwara_State\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwara State<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nigeria, on June 30th, when armed bandits ambushed people in Gada Woro community, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edu,_Nigeria\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edu Local Government Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LGA), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/saharareporters.com\/2025\/07\/01\/three-vigilantes-killed-several-security-operatives-injured-bandits-ambush-team-kwara\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resulting in the death of three vigilantes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and leaving several security operatives injured. Seven days later, three people were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailypost.ng\/2025\/07\/08\/bandits-strike-in-kwara-community-three-kidnapped\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidnapped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the neighboring Gbugbu community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another horrible incident on September 22, 2025, bandits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/inside-bandit-bloody-attack-that-emptied-kwara-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched a deadly attack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Oke Ode community in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ifelodun,_Kwara_State\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ifelodun LGA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kwara State, Nigeria. They <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailytrust.com\/gunmen-kill-12-in-fresh-kwara-attack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed 11 forest guards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the community head, and also kidnapped some of the residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These attacks came amid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/bandits-kill-policeman-abduct-villagers-in-fresh-kwara-attacks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a rising wave of attacks, kidnappings, and killings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that have gripped communities in Kwara South and Kwara North senatorial districts in recent months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">A day after the deadly attack at Oke Ode community, September 23,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/nigeria\/metro\/gunmen-kill-police-orderly-abduct-three-officers-in-kwara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bandits attacked a mining site at Agbonran<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">\u00a0community of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ifelodun,_Kwara_State\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ifelodun LGA<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">, killing a police officer connected with the company and abducting three other policemen.<\/span>\u00a0Four days later, bandits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afrikaeyes.com\/breaking-bandits-abduct-businessman-in-midnight-attack-on-kwara-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attacked the Tsaragi community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Edu LGA. After firing multiple gunshots into the air, the armed gunmen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afrikaeyes.com\/breaking-bandits-abduct-businessman-in-midnight-attack-on-kwara-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abducted a businessman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> named Suleiman Ndana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">The armed bandit groups, seeing no <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/05\/nigeria-mounting-death-toll-unchecked-attacks-armed-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government response or reprisal<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">, stepped up their attacks, moving from small-scale abductions to attacking larger communities.<\/span> Before the Oke Ode killings, the bandits had attacked communities such as Babanla, Baba Sango, Oreke, Ganmu Aliheri, and many others. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/05\/nigeria-mounting-death-toll-unchecked-attacks-armed-groups\/\">Human Rights Watch<\/a> (HRW) estimates that at least 638 villages have been attacked over the last two years across Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These attacks have led to at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/05\/nigeria-mounting-death-toll-unchecked-attacks-armed-groups\/\">10,000 deaths<\/a> over the last two years and the displacement of many residents of the affected communities. Due to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">fear of potential attacks, many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arise.tv\/bandits-kill-pregnant-woman-police-officer-kidnap-eight-in-kwara-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have fled <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arise.tv\/bandits-kill-pregnant-woman-police-officer-kidnap-eight-in-kwara-attacks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and relocated to Ilorin and other neighboring communities to seek refuge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kwara\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwara State<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> government has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/saharareporters.com\/2025\/10\/22\/bandits-attacks-kwara-government-shuts-45-public-schools-redeploys-teachers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closed 45 public schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the affected areas. Residents of the neighboring communities are living in fear and appealing to the government and security agencies to intervene and protect their lives and properties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Reactions to the killings<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After receiving intelligence about a potential attack on their community, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genocidewatch.com\/single-post\/kwara-village-pleads-for-rescue-after-deadly-lakurawa-raid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 local vigilantes in Isanlu Isin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attempted to repel suspected bandits in the area on September 14th. The encounter with the bandits was bloody; the bandits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/top-news\/821079-kwara-community-on-edge-as-bandits-kill-abduct-burn-villages.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed two of the local vigilantes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, abducted six others, and burned 27 motorcycles to ashes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To draw the government&#39;s attention, angry residents in the Isin community blocked the Ilorin\u2013Lokoja highway on September 12th. In October, young people in Tsaragi town in Edu LGA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/saharareporters.com\/2025\/09\/30\/emir-tsaragi-orders-arrest-leader-youths-protesting-against-rising-killings-banditry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took to the streets to protest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against kidnapping and banditry in the community. The Kwara South Youth Congress (KSYC) had also called on the President of Nigeria, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bola_Tinubu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bola Ahmed Tinubu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to declare a state of emergency in the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizens have also taken to social media with hashtags such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Kwaraisbleeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#KwaraIsBleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/SaveKwara\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#SaveKwara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pressure the government to take action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the national government has largely been silent, the Kwara State government has tried to take measures to address the issue. The state Governor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AbdulRahman_AbdulRazaq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leadership.ng\/banditry-kwara-gov-security-chiefs-visit-affected-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the affected communities. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/more-news\/824925-kwara-governor-seeks-more-troops-after-oke-ode-attacks.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condemned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the attacks, mourned the victims, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/more-news\/824925-kwara-governor-seeks-more-troops-after-oke-ode-attacks.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requested the deployment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of more federal troops to curb insecurity in the state. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenationonlineng.net\/we-will-fight-insecurity-with-resources-at-our-disposal-says-abdulrazaq\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assured<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the residents that his administration will do all it could to protect their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0After attending a security council meeting on October 2nd, 2025, he said: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will fight insecurity with every resource at our disposal. Kwara will not be a hiding place for criminals. To any criminal who seeks to destabilize the peace in Kwara, you may run, but you cannot escape justice. Kwara belongs to its people, and their peace will be defended.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other stakeholders have also taken action to address the insecurity. To enhance security measures in response to the escalating insecurity in the region, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nigerian_Army\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigerian Army<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Headquarters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tribuneonlineng.com\/insecurity-army-hq-directs-goc-ibadan-to-relocate-to-kwara\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2nd Division in Ibadan, to relocate to Kwara State on September 28th, 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nass.gov.ng\/about\/item\/9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigerian Senate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisdaylive.com\/2025\/10\/09\/kwara-senate-seeks-urgent-military-base-fgs-intervention-over-growing-insecurity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Federal Government of Nigeria to establish a permanent military base near the forest belt of Ifelodun LGA in Kwara South as a quick reaction force to counter armed attacks in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Operation Fasan Yanma<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nigerian Army personnel have been working to restore peace in Kwara State. The Nigerian Army troops of 2 Division\/Sector 3 Operation FASAN YANMA successfully <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100067341542365\/posts\/pfbid0eWnnHT8YNafPyaoqQP18GHBQrnTXdw6yCWfYusDTRZBs6XhDhxpP9V1YRSbqaN5il\/?app=fbl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rescued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 21 kidnapped victims that included 4 Chinese nationals. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1H8UG2YauE\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nine more kidnapped victims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were rescued by the troops of Operation Fasan Yanma on October 13th, 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Nicholas Rume, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100067341542365\/posts\/pfbid02gn4dsH39bnnhCc6K9VfGdHNiXxbU1wmqT5WL2hoJnWmYv9pdNpLzcoc9Hz2Hkj8jl\/?app=fbl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handed over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the 23 rescued hostages to the Governor of Kwara State on October 28, 2025. While receiving the hostages from the commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, the Governor\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">commended the Nigerian Army and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100067341542365\/posts\/pfbid02gn4dsH39bnnhCc6K9VfGdHNiXxbU1wmqT5WL2hoJnWmYv9pdNpLzcoc9Hz2Hkj8jl\/?app=fbl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced plans<\/a> to deploy forest guards after the army\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0cleanup to prevent ungoverned spaces and allow farmers to return to their farmlands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The cause of the escalating violence<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The destabilization of Kwara State and North-central Nigeria has been linked to different factors such as clashes between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icirnigeria.org\/?p=236442\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">farmers and herders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailytrust.com\/new-terror-group-mahmuda-intensifies-attacks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergence of new so-called terrorist groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/05\/nigeria-mounting-death-toll-unchecked-attacks-armed-groups\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">governance gaps<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icirnigeria.org\/?p=236442\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bandit spillover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some stakeholders have claimed violent Fulani herdsmen are behind the attacks, while others blame bandit spillover due to counterterrorist campaigns in the north. For example, due to intensified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100067341542365\/posts\/pfbid07KQELKwHk7yPGY7bHgj5rNrY8JZoNkPZR1URqS2rUGVBLeiG2i2BPEWPuCDaRgRXl\/?app=fbl\">counterinsurgency operations in northeast and northwest Nigeria<\/a>, many attackers are fleeing into the forests of Kwara State and its neighboring areas to seek refuge. According to a report by <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynigerian.com\/\">Daily Nigerian<\/a>, the Governor of <a href=\"https:\/\/nasarawastate.gov.ng\/\">Nasarawa State<\/a>, Abdullahi Sule, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynigerian.com\/new-terrorist-group-wulowulo-emerges-in-north-central\/\">claimed<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/military-declares-war-on-new-terror-group-wulowulo\/\">Wulowulo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cqjvqe4n7gzo\">Lakurawa group<\/a>, splinter groups of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boko_Haram\">Boko Haram<\/a> sect, an internationally recognized terror group, are targeting farmers and villagers in North-central Nigeria, particularly in Kwara State. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100021772396215\/posts\/pfbid03YSBoyhAMtDNFAXKHsT8gnxxodxt2EHLJrqzAxVuyg7772cS9PmW3Vg1uzoDbgWfl\/?app=fbl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sanusi Lafiagi, a public commentator and lecturer in the Department of Islamic Studies at Al-Hikmah University, expressed optimism about the improved security situation in Edu and Patigi Local Government Areas in Kwara State. Lafiagi wrote on his Facebook page:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alhamdulill\u0101h it&#39;s been a couple of weeks since the last reported cases of banditry in Edu and Patigi Local Government Areas. Peace and quiet are gradually returning to the once troubled and deserted villages. Kudos to the Armed forces for their sacrifices and their relentless and sustained battle against these criminal elements. Also, Kudos to the government at all levels for fulfilling their constitutional duties in spite of the challenges and setbacks.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lafiagi suggested some solutions to the authorities to continue improving the situation. He wrote: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, our appeals to the authorities are as follow:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Continue the combing of our forests to destroy and eliminate the criminals completely;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ensure the immediate and safe return of all hostages to their homes and families;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Establish a military base in Kwara North similar to the one in the South;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make a meaningful use of the forests, lest it becomes a base and safe haven for criminals;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Equip and support the local vigilantes with sophisticated weapons to complement the efforts of the military;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Support the victims of these violent crimes financially and psychologically to overcome these challenges;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Improve basic amenities such as road, hospitals, schools, electricity, etc., in these communities to ease livelihoods;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Establish and finance local intelligence gathering to build trust and mutual relationship between the authorities and the locals;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Reduce unemployment and consumption of illicit drugs among the youth to be able to eradicate crime;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Monitor and regularise mining activities, as a lot of these crimes are allegedly linked to mining;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Increase border patrol and security. The porosity of our borders is a major challenge to our security.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May All\u0101h protect us all.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the moment, the authorities are working to restore calm and order. Nigerian Armed Forces are still combing the forest belts in Kwara State and neighboring states such as Kogi State and Niger State in order to flush out criminals hiding in the forest.
